07/04/09 - Landmark bridge 'safe'

ENGINEERS have said Bristol's Clifton Suspension Bridge is safe after a structural fault closed the famous landmark for almost 24 hours.

The toll bridge was closed after a member of the public noticed one of the 162 vertical wrought iron rods had cracked.

Steel braces have been erected around the rod until a new one is installed and further checks are taking place.

The 414 metre bridge stands 75 metres above the highest water level. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, it was completed in 1864 and remains a busy route for traffic wishing to cross the Avon Gorge.
