Developing on the continued love affair that the public has had with smart since its UK launch, the new electric drive answers the questions of the urban mobility, versatility and styling but now with zero emissions driving. Innovative ideas, sensors and digital components which are familiar from higher vehicle classes make the new electric drive generation more than just cars with electric drives: they are mobility solutions for the city offering more fun and enjoyment than ever before.
To offer the electric drive across the entire smart range alongside traditional combustion engines is an achievement not to be understated as smart are the first manufacturer to do this. The first electric smart fortwo was introduced in 2007 but with the release of the fourth-generation of Smart’s electric powertrain is available across the range: the two-seater fortwo, its open-top sibling the fortwo Cabriolet and the four-seater forfour. The cabriolet also has the distinction of being the only all-electric convertible available on the market today.
Peak power is up 5kW to 60kW and that means 81bhp with an instant 118lb ft of torque. The top speed is limited to 80mph but it has plenty of get up and go where you really need it, scampering away from the lights and up to 60km/h (37mph) in a sprightly 4.9 seconds. And because it’s all-electric, there are no gear changes to get in the way of your progression.
Range has been improved – it’s up to 100 miles per charge – and the cars charge quicker than the previous generation, too. The cars’ 7.2kW charging system charges the battery to 80% in six hours from a standard UK power socket; a 16A wall box charger cuts that to 2hrs 30mins.
If you are thinking of reducing running cost all smart electric drive models are in Vehicle Excise Duty Band A, so you’ll pay no road tax. You’ll also qualify for the Office of Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) car grant, offering up to £4,500 off the cost of the car. And you may benefit from other savings such as free or subsidised parking plus you’ll even be exempt from the London Congestion Charge should you travel through the capital.
The new range is based on the prime model combustion engine variants and with the premium equipment line now fitted as standard meaning you have the features you need from the minute you drive away from the dealership including 7-inch display smart media system which includes 3D Sat-Nav, heated front seats for both driver & passenger and comfort windscreen wipers with automatic wipe/wash function.
With the premium equipment line a plethora of safety features are added on the electric drive range, where Active Brake Assist is standard as well as collision warning, situation adapted braking assistance and autonomous braking.
The transportation of two people, has never felt so spacious, the interior of the fortwo is a fun yet practical place to be, with ample room for driver and passenger, plus neat little touches such as cup holders and cubbyholes to store all your necessities.
The forfour is similarly spacious up front for two and as expected the storage capacity is increased when compared to the fortwo once the rear seats have been stowed, making it much more suitable if you consistently require a larger space.
An exclusive electric drive package is available to enhance the new urban motoring wonder; including 16 inch black or white alloys that are combined with striking solid black or solid white paint and electric green highlights to ensure you have the coolest smart in your city.
